Another shootout heartbreak for Al Sadd

Rahmati

Al Sadd came close to a famous win over Esteghlal in Tehran but for a second year in a row, a penalty shootout ended their hopes of reaching the group stage of the AFC Champions League.

Xavi Hernandez was keen to avoid another continental disappointment with the Qatari side, but his top class performance in the midfield was not enough as Mahdi Rahmati made two great saves to deny him and keep the scoreline goalless for 120 minutes.

Saad Al Sheeb saved Omid Ebrahimi’s effort to give Al Sadd the lead during the penalty shootout, but Ibrahim Majed blasted his shot wide and Mohammed Kasola’s attempt was too easy for Rahmati as the home side celebrated their return to the group stage of Asia’s top club competition.
