KAS Eupen produced an impressive performance against Pro League defending champions Club Brugge but failed to hold on to an early lead to suffer their fourth defeat this season.
Nigerian Henry Onyekuru shocked the home fans at Jan Breydel Stadium when he unleashed a powerful long range effort that found the back of Ludovic Butelle’s net in the ninth minute.
A mistimed tackle from Qatar U-21 international Fahad Shanin – who started every match this season for Eupen – brought down Ricardo Van Rijhn in the box and Jelle Vossen levelled from the spot in the 27th minute.
Later in the half, Onyekuru was clearly pulled from the shirt by Van Rijhn inside the box but the referee waived play on.
Stefano Denswil headed in Ruud Vormer’s cross in the 64th minute to put Club Brugge ahead.
Onyekuru continued to threat and he saw his effort blocked by Butelle after good work from Shanin on the left, before Vossen put the game beyond the visitors in the 80th minute with another penalty after he was brought down by Ibrahim Diallo.
Luis Garcia scored a consolation goal for Eupen two minutes from time with another penalty, after Butelle fouled Onyekuru and luckily escaped with only a yellow card.
