Making their second appearance in the tournament and their first since 2005, the result achieved today will be remembered in history as the first ever win for the Annabi Futsal in the finals.
Qatar’s goals came through Salem Khalifa, Amro Mohsen, Saad Bilal, Rashed Yousuf, Ali Al Sabah and Muneer Mohamed who scored one of Korea’s goals by mistake. Kim Min Kuk and Kim Jeong Nam scored the other two.
The team finished third in Group C behind Iran & Australia who booked the quarter-finals spots. The Iranians have one of the top teams in the world they topped the group with a perfect record after a 9-0 hammering of Australia today.
Yesterday they defeated Qatar 8-0, and on the opening day they crushed South Korea 14-1. They look favorites to snatch their 11th Asian Champions title. The only time they failed to win the Asian Championship title was the 2006 edition in Uzbekistan when the other Asian Futsal giants Japan defeated the hosts in the final.
Thailand & Kyrgyzstan also made it to the quarter-finals from Group A which saw good performances by the hosts UAE who were unlucky and finished third after a thrilling 4-2 defeat against the Thais.
No surprises in Group B as Japan and Lebanon qualified, but Group D saw a big surprise as Kuwait took top spot on goal difference from one of Asia’s futsal powerhouses Uzbekistan. Kuwait finished second behind Qatar in the qualifiers. They will now face the “Futsalroos” in the quarter-finals.
