Qatar opened their campaign in the 2012 AFC Futsal Championship with a 3-1 defeat against Australia.
The 12th edition of Asia’s top Futsal competition is hosted by UAE between May 25th and June 1st. All matches will be played in the city of Dubai.
Chris Zeballos gave the Australians a first half lead with a 4t minute strike. He then added a second nine minutes into the second half.
Rashid Yousuf reduced the deficit scoring Qatar’s only goal two minutes before the final whistle, but Andres Gomez sealed the win for the “Fustalroos” a minute later.
The other group C match saw title holders and 10-times-winnners Iran crushing South Korea with an incredible score of 14-1.
The tournament will continue today with Qatar taking on Iran and South Korea facing Australia. The top two teams in each group qualify for the quarter finals.
The Qatari team is making only their second appearance in the final tournament, and their first since 2005 in Vietnam where they failed to get past the group stage.
But in the past few years Qatar Football Federation (QFA) worked very hard on improving the quality of Futsal sport in Qatar, by developing local competitions and bringing in highly qualified coaching staffs.
