Brave Al Khor out despite defeating Al Wasl

Al Khor were knocked out of the 2012 Gulf Champions League semi finals despite a brave fight-back against Al Wasl of UAE in the second leg on Wednesday.

After losing the first leg 3-0 in Dubai, the Blue Knights’ hopes of reaching the final looked dim despite playing on home soil. But, a fourth minute goal from Reda Shanbo revived their hopes again.

The visitors, coached by Argentine legend Diego Armando Maradona, focused on defense for the rest of the match, but when Al Khor doubled the score five minutes from time through Mohamed Jomaa, fans at Al Khor Stadium were up for a nail-biting final minutes.

With the home team pushing forward for the third, Argentine Mariano Donda scored a last minute goal that gave Maradona’s side a spot in the final, where they will face Al Muharraq of Bahrain.

Warm welcome for Maradona

With Maradona making his first visit to Qatar since relocating to the Gulf region to take charge of Al Wasl, dozens of fans made the trip to Al Khor stadium to catch a glimpse of the legend. Some fans were even lucky to get a photo with him as the Argentine star was in good mood.

Many fans that made the trip from Doha did not make the return trip to the Qatari capital until Maradona stepped into the shuttle that transported the team to the Airport.

Inter Milan and Juventus former star Alessandro Altobelli who played against Maradona in the 80’s, was in the VIP section and was seen welcoming him on the touchlines before the game. Altobelli is working as a TV analyst with Doha-based Al Jazeera Sport Channel.
