Al Wasl (3) Al Khor (0) – Match Report

Al Khor suffered a heavy setback in their hopes of winning their first regional title after they slumped to a 3-0 defeat against Al Wasl of UAE in the semi-final first leg on Wednesday.

The second leg will be played at Al Khor stadium on May 29th, and the Qatari team will need a miracle to overcome the Dubai-based team who is coached by Argentine legend Diego Armando Maradona.

The defeat could have been heavier if the home team took all the chances they created as they controlled most of the match.

The first half ended goalless with the best chance for the home team coming to former Al Gharrafa striker Mohamed Reza Khalatabari, his powerful shot from inside the area hit the post.

Al Khor went close in the first minute after the break, when Julio Cesar curled a free kick inches away from the left post. They never had a better chance in the rest of the match as Cesar and his compatriot Madson kept on playing individually while Ibrahim Awal was very slow. The Blue team are suffering clearly in attack since the mid-season departure of their star striker Momouni Dagano to QSL champions Lekhwiya.

Uruguayan striker Juan Manuel Olivera opened the score in the 53rd minute with a simple tab-in after a low cross from right winger Rashed Issa.

In the 69th minute, Olivera added a second with a powerful shot after great work from Khalatabari who used his skill to get past Iraqi defender Salam Shaker before sending a low cross to the Uruguayan.

The Knights of Al Khor totally surrendered to their opponents and they were punished in injury time, when again the brilliant Rashed Issa was left with time and space to send a powerful shot that goalkeeper Papa Djibril could not stop properly and the team captain Essa Ali was the first to respond to complete the impressive victory for the home team.
